Spill Control Interactive Workshop
These workshops are conducted outdoors in a safe location with ample parking.
Location. Location. Location!
Ideal sites include a slope which leads downhill to a drain. The drain needs to be plugged or discharged to a safe location (ex. grassy swale). The area needs to be large enough to have Learners standing comfortably around a display of BMPs.
What can Learners expect to discuss during the event?
Various Spill Control BMPs and Sorbent Products
Application of BMPs and Sorbent Products
Cleanup Considerations
Hands on Experience
A "spill" is created using stormwater system detection dye or food coloring in water.
The teams or participant volunteers respond to the "spill" with different types of sorbent products to determine how well they work.
Field Site Criteria
Below is a description of the desired elements for a field location. These characteristics should be adhered to as closely as possible for a site to be viable for such a course.
Field Site Logistic and Considerations
Prior to class:
- A place to receive and store BMP shipments for the course, and either a forklift or several staff members to unload
- Ability to transport stored BMPs to the field site (if not delivered directly to that location)
- Host may want to have canopies (weather dependent) and seating installed onsite one day prior
- Orient training area based on wind and sunlight
- Tools (see Tools list below)
- Designate a location and means of disposal of used BMPs when class is completed
- Portable toilets, if applicable
Post Class:
- Assistance with clean up and disposal of used BMPs
- Sweeper truck or catch basin cleaning services may be needed
